主要な学術上の業績

火山灰からできる火山灰土壌は火山国日本の重要な土壌で、黒ボク土、国際的にはAndosol(暗土)などと呼ばれるように、母材の特異性を反映する形態と独特の理化学的性質をもっていて、戦後の農業ではその低位生産性が問題になりました。この火山灰土壌からイモゴライトとアロフェンという二つの粘土鉱物を分離、精製して、イモゴライトは、高性能電子顕微鏡でようやく見える直径2nmのナノ・チューブ、アロフェンは中空の直径3~5nmのナノ・ボールから構成され、さらに電子線回折、化学分析などでこのチューブとボールをつくる原子の組み立てを明らかにしたことが学術上の中心となる業績です。合わせて、ケイ素、アルミニウム、酸素、水素からなるイモゴライト、アロフェンが火山灰から土壌ができる過程でどのようにして生成し、この二つの粘土鉱物、加えて関係の深いカオリン鉱物ハロイサイトがどのように水分保持、無機・有機イオンの交換・吸着の働きをし、火山灰土壌の特殊性や農業生産上の問題とどのように関係するかを明らかにしました。
