東南アジア地域で60%以上を占めるフタバガキ科樹種について、属によって、種子の貯蔵条件が異なることを明らかにしました。また、種や属によって、環境条件に対する反応が異なり、過酷な環境条件に適応する種が存在します。熱帯では、太陽が真上から照らすために、林内は、光が遮られて暗くなります。したがって、稚樹が生長するためには、光条件が重要です。林内の稚樹が十分な成長を遂げるための光条件を明らかにし、その成果を利用して、ペルーのアマゾンで、マメ科の樹種を発芽から成木まで生長させることができました。 さらに、蒸散率の高い葉や若い幹を切り落とし、水分欠乏を抑制し、活着率を上げたスタンプ苗(根株苗)植栽法を開発しました。過酷な環境に適応する樹種を選抜し、それらを用いて熱帯林再生のための植林活動をおこなっています。
