主要な学術上の業績

間野英二氏は、テュルク文献学と中央アジア史の解明に大きな貢献をしました。テュルク文献学としては『バーブル・ナーマ』の研究が特筆に値します。同書は15世紀末の中央アジアに生まれ、アフガニスタンを経て、インドにムガル朝を開設したバーブルがその経験と見聞をチャガタイ・テュルク語で著した回想録です。中央アジア史については、14－16世紀のティムール朝史とモグーリスターン・ハン国史を扱った研究があります。また、中央アジア史を、シルクロードを媒介とする東西交渉史としてのみ捉える傾向のあった従来の説を修正し、北の遊牧民と南の定住農耕民の関係、すなわち南北の関係をより重視して解明すべきであるという新しい視点を導入しました。
