A request concerning transfer of copyrights of previously published articles

A request concerning transfer of copyrights of previously published articles

The Japan Academy is planning to digitally archive the "Proceedings of the Japan Academy, Series A", "Proceedings of the Japan Academy", and "Proceedings of the Imperial Academy", published by it and its predecessor the Imperial Academy. This digital archive will include all previously published materials starting from the inaugural issues of each publication and will be made freely available to the public via the internet without charge or restriction. The archive will be placed on the websites Project Euclid (http://projecteuclid.org/) and J-STAGE (http://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/).

In moving forward with this project, the Japan Academy needs to obtain permission from copyright holders (Japanese Copyright Law Articles 21-28).

With regard to the articles published prior to January 1999 in Volumes 1-74 in which ownership of the copyrights is unclear, the editorial board of the "Proceedings of the Japan Academy, Series A" would, as a first step, like to obtain the reproduction rights (Japanese Copyright Law Article 21) and the public transmission rights (Japanese Copyright Law Article 23) from the copyright holders in order to quickly make public these electronic archives so that researchers can use them. Copyright holders who wish not to grant reproduction and public transmission rights to the Academy are requested to contact the Academy at the address noted below before 30 June 2006. In cases whereby the Academy is not contacted, processing will be carried out as though permission has been granted.

In the next step, so as to more effectively utilize previously published materials, the editorial board would like to request that copyright holders transfer their copyrights to the Academy as prescribed under Japanese Copyright Law Articles 21-28. Copyright holders who agree to the transfer of their copyrights are requested to sign the "Copyright Transfer Form", which can be found at the following URL:
https://www.japan-acad.go.jp/pdf/english/publishing/ctform_a.pdf
Please send it to the address noted below. Those who wish not to transfer their rights are requested to contact the Academy by March 31, 2007. In cases whereby the Academy is not contacted, processing will be carried out as though the transfer has been approved.

With regard to articles that appeared in Volume 75 or later, we have requested each author via e-mail or letter to transfer their copyrights to the Academy. In case you have not done so, please send a signed Copyright Transfer Form to the Academy as soon as possible. The form is attached hereto, and can be used for both Volumes 1-74 and Volumes 75-81.

Please note that the copyright transfer we are requesting is for the sole purpose of making the "Proceedings" electronically available to the public. Thus, authors may use the subject materials without permission for their own research purposes.

Thank you for your much appreciated cooperation.
