ウイルスは増殖の過程で異変を起こしたり、細胞の染色体を取り込んだりします。花房秀三郎氏は共同研究者とともに、このように変化した染色体を取り込んだウイルスの感染が癌を生ずる可能性を示し、癌は細胞の遺伝子に起こる特定の変化によることを直接証明しました。このような癌細胞には特有の遺伝子（癌遺伝子）が生ずることを明らかにし、発癌の基本的な概念を確立しました。また研究を通じて癌遺伝子が細胞にもたらす多様な変化も明らかにされました。さらに、癌遺伝子として働きうる遺伝子の産物が、正常細胞の中で、多様な蛋白質と相互作用を起こし、細胞情報の伝達に非常に大きな役割を果たしていることを明らかにしました。
