柴田承二氏は、戦後、社会問題にもなったイスランディア黄変米事件に際し原因菌の毒成分の構造を解明するなど数多くの菌、地衣類成分の化学的研究に成果を挙げました。また一方、薬学者が早くから研究に着手しながら解明されなかった漢方薬の有効成分について、化学的研究法に新しい薬理試験を併用する方法で精査し、薬用人参、芍薬、柴胡などの繁用される生薬類の有効成分を明らかにしました。このことにより生薬学の研究分野に大きく貢献しました。
