森 亘氏は、一貫して病理学の立場から研究を進めました。(1) 劇症肝炎に際しての、急激かつ広汎な肝細胞出血壊死の背景には、生体側の要因が特に深く関与することに注目、それがいわゆるシュワルツマン反応であることを明らかにしました。実験的にシュワルツマン反応を用いて広汎な肝細胞出血壊死を起こすことに成功すると共に、シュワルツマン反応自体についてもその準備・惹起の両因子として菌毒素のみならず、HBs抗原、その他のウイルスを用いた実験からこれらが有効に働くことを実証、併せて当該反応の局所型、全身型に加え、第3の臓器型の存在を提唱しました。(2) メラトニンの生物学的定量法を創案することにより、当該ホルモンの発見（ラーナーらによる）に大きく寄与しました。またメラトニンがコルチコステロイドに対して拮抗的に働くことを証明しました。(3) その他、癌を含む病理学一般について、学問の進歩に貢献しました。
