石坂公成氏は、アレルゲンと反応してヒトにアレルギーを起こす物質がユニークな免疫グロブリンに属する抗体であることを発見し、この蛋白を同定して免疫グロブリンE（IgE）と命名しました。更に同氏は、IgEが血液中の好塩基球と組織の肥満細胞に高い親和性で結合すること、そして、細胞に結合しているIgE抗体にアレルゲンが反応すると、これらの細胞はヒスタミンやロイコトリエンを遊離してアレルギー症状を起こすことを明らかにしました。
