動物個体の形成には細胞どうしの接着が重要ですが、竹市雅俊氏はこの接着にカルシウムを必要とする機構としない機構があることを発見し、前者に関与するタンパク質分子をカドヘリンと命名しました。また、カドヘリンには多種類あり、細胞の選択的接着を支配していることも明らかにしました。さらにカドヘリンの機能を制御する因子アルファ・カテニンを同定し、その発現の消失が癌細胞の接着異常に関与することを明らかにしました。最近では、カドヘリンが神経細胞間のシナプスの安定性に関与することも明らかにしています。同氏は重要な国際学術誌の多くの編集委員をつとめる等、細胞接着研究分野における国際的リーダーです。
